WAI-ARIA & Keyboard Accessibility

Make the modal fully usable for screen readers and keyboard-only users.

The Scenario

The company has just failed an accessibility audit. The modal you built looks great to sighted mouse-users, but screen readers do not know it is open, and keyboard users can accidentally tab to hidden elements behind the modal.

The Brief

Upgrade the modal to meet WAI-ARIA standards. You must: 1) Add the correct `role` and `aria-*` attributes. 2) Implement "Focus Trapping" so that pressing the Tab key cycles only through the modals interactive elements. 3) Ensure the Escape key closes the modal. 4) Return focus to the original trigger button when the modal closes.

Deliverables

  • The updated modal code including all ARIA attributes
  • The JavaScript logic for the focus trap
  • The keyboard event listeners (Escape key handling)

Submission Guidance

Focus trapping is difficult. Do not use an external library like focus-trap for this exercise - write the logic yourself to prove you understand how the DOM handles focus.
