Taxonomy Design for a Large E-Commerce Site

Design the product taxonomy for a 5,000-SKU e-commerce store.

The Scenario

A South African home goods retailer is moving from 3 physical stores to an online store with 5,000 products. Products range from furniture to kitchenware to garden tools. Many products belong to multiple categories (a garden bench is both "Garden" and "Furniture").

The Brief

Design the complete product taxonomy. Handle hierarchical categories, cross-category products, faceted navigation, and the naming conventions that make browsing intuitive.

Deliverables

  • A 3-level category hierarchy with at least 8 top-level categories
  • A cross-category strategy: how products that belong to multiple categories are handled
  • A faceted navigation design: which attributes become filters (size, colour, price, material, etc.)
  • Naming conventions: rules for consistent category and product naming

Submission Guidance

A taxonomy is not a folder structure. Products should be findable through multiple paths. Show how a user looking for a "wooden garden bench" could find it via Garden, Furniture, or Material: Wood.

Submit Your Work

Your submission is graded against the rubric on the right. If you pass, you get a public Badge URL you can share on LinkedIn. There is no draft save, so work offline first and paste your finished response here.
